Webinar: Ecological Farming as a solution to adapt to climate change

Webinar: Ecological Farming as a solution to adapt to climate change

December 8, 2022 from 2 to 4 pm (GMT+1)

Intensive farming system that rely heavily on the chemical fertilizer and pesticide industry is called into question because of its negative impact on human health, on environment degradation, and worsening climate change.  Many countries around the world are including agriculture in their potential climate change mitigation options, especially in Africa where the need to adapt to the climate hazards is relentless in order to feed nearly 2 billion people by 2050. Modern agriculture can rely on the principles of agroecology to improve its resilience, while reducing its negative impact on the climate. Ecological Farming is based on seven fundamental principles (i) strengthening food sovereignty, (ii) putting farmers and rurality first, (iii) improving food production and yields, (iv) promoting biodiversity, (v) preserving water and soil health, (vi) choosing ecological methods to control pests, and (vii) building resilience in food systems. Thus, ecological agriculture is an essential component of a healthy and sustainable food system.

This webinar will enlighten public opinion on the importance of reforming the agricultural system in our country by adopting the principles of agroecology for better resilience to climate change. Dr. Slaheddine ABDELDAÏEM (FAO) will talk about the vulnerability of farmers to climate change; followed by Dr. Mokhtar ELBEKKAY (IRA) who will present the importance of preserving the biodiversity of local plant genetic resources for a better resilience of the oasis ecosystem to climate change, to finish with Pr. Chedly ABDELLY (ANPR) who will speak about the exploitation of local extremophile plants to improve agricultural yields in marginal areas. This webinar will be moderated by Dr. Naceur Djebali (CBBC).
