The Quest for Economic and Monetary Sovereignty in 21st Century Africa

The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung in collaboration with the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity and the network “Politics of money” is organizing the International conference: “The quest for economic and Monetary Sovereignty in 21st Century Africa: lessons to be learnt and ways forward” from 6 to 9 November in the Cité de la Culture, Tunis.

This is the first conference of this scale organized in Africa on African economic and monetary sovereignty, which will be attended by researchers, economic experts, activists, and journalists from Europe, the United States, India, and from different African countries, such as Prabhat Patnaik, Jan Kregel, Silvia Federici, Fadhel Kaboub, Heiner Flassbeck, Chibuike Uche, Daniela Gabor, Jerome Roos, Cederic Mbeng Mezui, Ndongo Samba Sylla and Kai Koddenbrock, and about thirty other panelists. During which they will raise the issue of the monetary and economic sovereignty of our African countries and discuss the future paths that must be followed to ensure well-being, social justice, employment and a dignified life for the African peoples.

Our aim is to open the discussion about money, debt dependency, African dependency, and international monetary relations.

we will address questions regarding the potential shapes and forms of African monetary and financial independence and sovereignty. We will further explore the leeways for monetary policies for countries that depend on varying degrees of monetary sovereignty. The conference will also focus on alternative and transformative forms of organising financial and monetary systems that enable socio-ecological transformation of the continent and can help develop a dignified life for people in the African context.
