Call for Tender: Female Farmworkers Conditions in Egypt

Call for Tender: Female farmworkers conditions in Egypt

Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, North Africa office

  1.   Background

The agricultural sector employs nearly a third of the world’s workforce, and women account for around 40% of the agricultural workforce. In North Africa, agriculture is a major sector for women’s employment, with 55% of women compared to 23% of men. In Egypt, according to the latest agricultural census in 2010, the total number of women working in the agriculture sector reaches five million, 40% of whom work unpaid for their families.

The dynamism of female farmworkers is linked to the accelerated growth of export-led agriculture policy and the male migration. For women, work in the agricultural sector raised issues related to health and safety conditions, the division of laborlabour locally and internationally, and its relationship to empowering or exploiting women. The conditions of farmworkers and food production are of particular importance considering the current health crisis, fears of a recurrence of a new food crisis and climate changes, adding an additional dimension to the crises in the agriculture workers.

In this regard, the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS) is funding the “Female farmworkers conditions in Egypt” project, focusing on the conditions of work for females in the agriculturein agriculture sector in Egypt, and the intersectionality between gender and economic aspects of this laborlabour market. We imagine that the development of the experiences of women working in the agricultural sector and linking them to the global food system, laborlabour relations, division of laborlabour, representations of the body, food, and health, will provide a theoretical contribution to both gender studies and studies of agricultural and food political economy in Egypt.
