Call for Papers
Challenging Social and Cultural Transformations:
Gender and Youth Policies and Activism in New Authoritarian Regimes
26-27 February 2022, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

We are very excited to announce our call for papers for the workshop “Challenging Social and Cultural Transformations in New Authoritarian Regimes”. This workshop aims to discuss social and cultural transformations in new authoritarian regimes, such as Poland, Hungary and Turkey as well as the reactions of diverse oppositional actors to these policies. This way possible alternatives, including democratic ones, to these transformations are to be uncovered. Considering the extensiveness and depth of recent authoritarian social and cultural transformations in new authoritarian countries, the workshop will mainly focus on two interrelated policy areas and fields of social movements: Gender and youth policies and activism. These two cornerstones, promoted by right-wing populist leaders, will be highlighted
as follows:
• Gender dimension of new-authoritarian policies: Abortion, family policies and
women and LGBTIQ+s rights, the re-organization of gender relations etc.
• Youth policies of populist-authoritarian governments: Youth policies and youth
activism, etc.

The workshop welcomes submissions focusing on gender and youth policies of new authoritarian regimes, social and cultural transformations in new authoritarian regimes, as well as current challenges/responses to these regimes, specifically gender and youth mobilization. We intend to produce a joint publication as a result of this workshop. After the workshop, we will ask for the submission of the final papers for publication – with the usual possibility that papers may have to be revised for publication (special issue or edited book) within a reasonable amount of time.

Please submit your abstract of up to 500 words by 25 October 2021 to Melehat Kutun (kutunmel@hu-berlin.de) and Burcu Binbuga (kinikbur@hu-berlin.de).

Travel and accommodation costs of the selected workshop participants will be subsidized.
