Call for applications for Short Fiction and Documentary Filmmakers and Investigative Journalists
“Views on Climate Crisis and a just collapse in North Africa”
The development, production or post-production of short Fictions / documentaries
The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, North Africa office, launches the call for applications for its new project “Views on Climate Crisis”.
Hence, the RLS invites filmmakers based in North Africa to submit proposals for short films or documentaries that explore the diverse responses to the climate crisis in the region. Through its “Views on Climate Crisis” project, the RLS aims to support the production of visual stories that highlight the coping solutions being developed by local communities and activists for a just collapse in an increasingly difficult context.
1. Background
North Africa is particularly vulnerable to the devastating impacts of climate warming. Rising temperatures, exacerbated by desertification, are leading to more frequent and intense heatwaves. Water scarcity, a chronic issue in many North African countries since the Roman Empire, is further compounded by changing rainfall patterns and increased evaporation. Extreme weather events, such as droughts, floods, and sandstorms, are becoming more severe and unpredictable, posing significant threats to livelihoods, ecosystems, and social stability.
Urgent actions are imperative for all societies in North Africa to cope with the looming climate collapse. Local communities and activists are looking for coping solutions, from promoting agro-ecology to safeguarding fragile ecosystems. Their commitment is fundamental to mitigating the impacts and building community resilience.
Unfortunately, the effectiveness of these grassroots initiatives often goes unrecognized, and their uplifting impact is not highlighted enough in mainstream media. Documentaries and films can play a crucial role in raising awareness, sparking dialogue, and inspiring action by showcasing the effects of unfolding climate collapse and the resilience of North African communities. These visual narratives can empower individuals and organizations to take meaningful steps to engage with a just collapse.
